Not many people think that soap operas contribute to something good of the society. They are mostly seen as shallow and addictive. But the truth is that these soap operas have provided educational entertainment to people all around the world. Here are some of the ways soap operas have changed the world.

Growing food

The Archers are one of the longest running soap operas. It started in 1951. It was produced by BBC radio and the Ministry of Agriculture. The storyline was about country folk. It encouraged farmers to try out new things which could increase productivity.

Getting people sewing

The rags-to-riches story in 1969 showed that a domestic employee made her fortune using the sewing machine. The soap opera Simplemente Maria telecasted on a Peruvian TV increased the sales of sewing machines. More people were getting enrolled in sewing classes as well.

Teaching adults to read

In 1975, the majority of the Mexican workforce was illiterate. Mexican television writer Miguel Sabido started a series called Ven Conmigo which showed that an elderly man graduated from literacy class. He ended up reading the letter sent by his daughter. At the end of the episode, it mentioned that national distribution center will provide free literacy booklets and about 250,000 people showed up the next day to get the booklets.
