It is unknown at this time if both flashbacks and full classic episodes will be shown or just flashbacks.

February 25, 1999 - Here's a brief recap of the one-page article on Matt and Vanessa in the current issue of Soap Opera Digest. Some of the comments have been upsetting to Mattessa fans online.

  • The article referred to Matt and Vanessa fans as "Matessa" fans, misspelling the term most Matt and Vanessa fans use (Mattessa).
  • GL head writer Barbara Esensten says "The fans were distressed when we spent six months doing one of the best reunion stories that I have ever seen on television."
  • Esensten says Mattessa fans were "still complaining" about the story of Matt building the dream house in an attempt to lure Vanessa back to town.
  • Esensten said "[Paul Rauch] produced the most incredible love scene I have ever seen on a couch" and the mail said "How come they didn't have a bedroom."
  • Esensten said "I think it is only fair for the fans to know that we can only use her [Maeve Kinkead, Vanessa] three days a week. There are times when we have built more of a story and have had to pull back."
  • Soap Opera Digest comments "If fans want the actor [Kurt McKinney] to stick around, they have to accept the fact that he will only do so if given a challenging storyline, i.e., something other than wedded bliss twice a week."
  • Esensten asserts that GL loves the couple, saying "We love their enthusiasm." Soap Opera Digest referred to them as "rabid fans."

March 1, 1999 - Betty in Tampa reports:

This past Saturday Robert Newman was appearing at the Sears store in our new mall, Citrus Park Town Center, in Tampa, FL. I went to see him and the line to see him was real, real long. He had already been there two hours signing autograph pictures and shaking hands when I got there but he was so gracious and good looking. I was so nervous that I blurted out I love you and I'm 68 years old!

Something else that was interesting happened. While I was waiting in the long line and discussing GL with the lady in front of me, there was a young girl in front of her and I saw her writing something on a paper for someone and looked closer and it was Susan, Brittany Snow. There she was waiting in line like the rest of us to see Josh! She was so nice and sweet. Said she just lived two minutes from the mall and just wanted to say hi to Robert!

March 4, 1999 - Guiding Light will not air next Thursday and Friday, March 11 or 12, due to CBS' coverage of college basketball.

March 5, 1999 - Kimberly Simms (ex-Mindy) has been busy filming segments for a proposed travel/adventure show titled Travel Escapes with Marisa and Kimberly. Marisa is Marisa Tranquilli, a college friend of Kimberly's. Kimberly doesn't think GL's executive producer, Paul Rauch, is ready to bring back Mindy, but she stated she'd be happy to come back to GL if asked.

March 5, 1999 - Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny) and Joie Lenz (Michelle) will help announce the Daytime Emmy nominees on Thursday, March 11.

March 8, 1999 - Sally in Florida shares her experience at Robert Newman's Florida appearance. Sally writes:

I live in Sarasota, Florida which is about 70 miles south of Tampa. I had heard on the TV about the opening of the Citris Park Town Center and that Robert Newman would be in the Sears store to sign autographs. My husband drove me and my mother, daughter, grandaughter, and a friend up there just to see "Josh". He was well worth the trip up there. I must agree with Betty that he was the most pleasant and gracious and accomodating person. He was in a "stuffy" environment with people all around him and a big long line of people waiting their turn. It was so hot in there and I felt so sorry for him that he had to sit there for 3 hours signing autographs. He was so sweet and when it was our turn, he took time for us to take pictures with him and my mother who is 85 and in a wheel chair, also had her turn with him. He got up from behind the table he was sitting at and came around and shook her hand and asked her how she was. He really didn't have to do that. He was so nice He told my little grandaughter, Chelsea who is 6, that his daughters best friend is named Chelsea. He was very personal with each and every person.. I heard him ask one little girl who looked to be about 11 years old, if anyone ever told her she looked like Kimberly J. Brown who played Marah. He told her she looked just like her. To say the least, we enjoyed ourselves and are very glad we made the trip up there.

March 9, 1999 - Here's an interesting comment from a recent Soap Opera Digest chat:

ELT24 asks: Did you know of the controversy on the internet about Harley not introducing Susan to you her grandmother!!???

Kim Zimmer: I had heard about the controversy and of course I do lurk in the message boards. What you all have to remember is that usually what you're screaming about are things that we have battled out in the rehearsal hall weeks before it even gets to you.

March 25, 1999 - Congratulations to Jerry ver Dorn (Ross) who celebrates 20 years of service to Guiding Light this month. Ver Dorn mentioned in an online chat recently that GL is considering putting out a tape this year about Ross Marler, similar to the tapes they previously made about Roger Thorpe and Reva Shayne. Speaking of those tapes, I am frequently asked if they are still available, and they are not, to the best of my knowledge. Zaslow mentioned in an online chat prior to his death that he did ask P&G a few times if they would re-release the Roger Thorpe tape as a fundraiser for ALS, but they declined.

March 26, 1999 - Would you like to order the Reva - The Scarlet Years video? It is available from the Museum of Radio & Television Gift Shop. They also have some older episodes of Guiding Light available. Thanks very much to Christine A. who alerted me to this information.

March 28, 1999 - King World and CBS are discussing a merger. King World produces Hollywood Squares, Oprah Winfrey Show, The Roseanne Show, Jeopardy! and Inside Edition. In most markets the talk shows and game shows run before or after the soap operas. If CBS takes over King World, they will push these shows to the affiliates. If this happens, will Guiding Light finally return to airing after As The World Turns on most affiliates, to make room for the talk shows in the morning or late afternoon? Stay tuned!

The soap channel will air classic episodes, new movies and some original programming. It may also air cancelled ABC soaps such as Ryan's Hope. The big question is, will GL (past or current episodes) ever run on the soap opera channel? It's possible. The sticking point is, will it take away viewers from CBS affiliates?
