Interesting note: There were 19 actors mentioned in this poll category, with Hunt Block voted fourth best. Last year Hunt Block was voted GL's second worst actor!
For the second year in a row, Phillip and Harley were chosen GL's best couple. They received 926 votes, 53% of the total! Tied for second was Josh and Reva (13% or 217 votes) and Cassie and Hart (13% or 227 votes). Fourth was Buzz and Jenna (6% or 110 votes). Matt and Vanessa were fifth with 58 votes or 3%. My favorite write in votes: the two people who are still holding out hope against all hope who voted for Beth and Phillip. There is no doubt Sean McCullough will be missed in Springfield. He was chosen as GL's best newcomer with 713 votes or 45% of the total. Second was Selena Davis with 456 votes or 29%. My favorite write in vote: teen Cleva.
Alexandra Spaulding (47% or 291 votes) and India von Halkein (32% or 200 votes) were overwhelmingly chosen the best returnees of 1998. Ken Norris received 11% of the votes (66). Annie Dutton's return was liked by 8% of the fans (52 votes) and David Grant's by 2% (9 votes). If the roles of Annie and David were not recast when they returned, they probably would have fared better (given a decent storyline). Hart/Cassie/Dinah was chosen as the best triangle of 1998 with 572 votes (39%). Ben/Blake/Ross came in second with 407 votes or 25%. Third was Beth/Phillip/Harley in third with 367 votes or 22%. My favorite write-in vote for best triangle: Josh/Cassie/Annie! Ben Warren is going strong as GL's best villian, according to the fans. He received 67% of the vote (401). Alan Spaulding came in second with 138 votes or 23%. She took her mother's blood pressure pills, set a fire in her bedroom, and had a one-night stand in order to get pregnant this past year, all to keep Hart to herself. Who was it? None other than Dinah Marler. She was voted GL's Best Villianess with 328 votes or 44% of the total. Second place was Annie Dutton with 17% or 124 votes. She was named after a motorcyle and grew up on Fifth Street. Dinah Marler helped deliver her first child. She's none other than Harley Cooper - your choice as favorite female character. Harley received 270 out of 731 votes (37%). Reva Shayne (126 votes) and Cassie Layne (125 votes) statistically tied for second place with 17% of the votes each.
Was there any doubt Phillip would be number one for favorite male character? He received 171 votes or 27%. Second place went to Buzz with 95 votes. Poor Jesse and Michelle, they get no respect. They led this category with 590 votes. Thirty-five percent voted for them. Hart and Dinah came in second with 429 votes. My pick for best write in vote: Josh and clone Reva. With extremely tough shoes to fill and playing to a tough crowd, Signy Coleman as Annie Dutton was chosen as the worst recast of 1998. She received 238 votes or 35% of the total. The return of Annie Dutton was also chosen as the worst returnee of the year, with 274 of 522 votes (52%). Statistically it's a tie, but Annie/Josh/Reva "wins" the category by 6 votes, beating Jesse/Michelle/Drew. The continuation of this triangle (voted as the best triangle for 1997) was not welcomed by many. Annie/Josh/Reva received 468 votes, Jesse/Michelle/Drew received 462. Third place went to Matt/Beth/Vanessa with 243 votes. My favorite write in vote was for Buzz/Nola/Jenna. Granted, Nola did leave the show in 1998, but is someone still rolling their eyes from the "Nola stalking Buzz" story?! Vicky Spaulding was voted GL's worst newcomer (33% or 366 votes). Rob Layne came in second with 330 votes (30%). Rebuilding the Spauldings is an idea many fans like, but this character isn't catching on. Victoria Platt (Vicky Spaulding) was voted as GL's worst actress, receiving 135 out of 544 votes (25%). Rebecca Budig (ex-Michelle Bauer) came in second place with 96 votes (18%). The rest of the top five: Signy Coleman (Annie, 72 votes or 13%), Beth Chamberlin (Beth, 44 votes or 8%), and Lauren Mayhew (Marah, 32 votes or 6%). For the second year in a row Paulo Benedeti (Jesse Blue) was chosen as GL's worst actor. He received 141 votes or 28%. There were 510 total votes in this category. The rest of the top five: Ryan Brown (Bill Lewis, with 84 votes or 16%), Frank Grillo (Hart Jessup, with 44 votes or 9%), Kevin Mambo (ex-Marcus, with 32 votes or 6%), and Terrell Tilford (David Grant, with 27 votes or 5%).
With 719 votes received, there were three main storylines mentioned as worst for 1998: the cloning of Reva (159 votes), Teri being Annie (121 votes), and Michelle's blindness (104 votes). Twenty-percent of the fans said "just shouldn't have done it" when it came to cloning. Farewell Dolly. Polling for the best and worst of 1998 on Guiding Light was done via e-mail. Over 20,000 votes were received in twenty categories. This poll is not scientific and reflects only the opinions of those GL fans who chose to participate. The results cannot be assumed to represent the opinions of GL fans in general, nor the public as a whole. Certain characters or actors were chosen to be invalid for particular categories. Here is an explanation:
Voting guidelines were sent to all those polled. In case of confusion of how votes were tallied, here are the guidelines on what votes were deemed invalid and were not counted:
In order to avoid confusion between characters that were recast, fans who don't know the real names of the actor playing certain roles, and also due to the passing of Michael Zaslow, some decisions about the poll were made: These are:
Obviously it is very important to each voter that their vote is counted for the character and/or actor they mean it to be for. Since some actors are so closely associated with a role, I hope these guidelines clear up any confusion. |
