Star Encounters - Ellen Dolan

Submitted by Dawn on 5/11/00

Ellen Dolan was raised in my hometown of Decorah, Iowa. I grew up knowing her family well and following her from Guiding Light to As the World Turns.

My junior year of high school, I asked our principal if he ever took graduation speaker suggestions. I suggested Ellen and he worked through her family to schedule her as the graduation speaker my senior year - Class of 1993.

Ellen came and I was thrilled to have her start her speech by thanking me for thinking of her. According to her father, she was extremely honored to be asked back to speak. She gave a moving speech I have thought about hundreds of times in the 7 years since that time.

Her speech was on the 5 rules of defensive driving as being the most important thing she learned in high school because of the way they applied to life "Get the Big Picture" "Aim High in Steering" "Leave Yourself an Out" and the 5th she could not remember so turned it into the theme of never stopping asking questions in life. She related wonderful personal experience to each rule and served as a great source of inspiration to me and many of my classmates.

I will always feel blessed to have known Ellen's family and still follow a fellow native of Decorah, IA.
