As The World Turns News - 1999

January 1, 1999 - A DAYS fan has opened a new voting booth for Best Soap Opera. Show your support for ATWT!

January 1, 1999 - Ex-ATWT co-headwriter Millee Taggart (who played Janet on Search for Tomorrow) and best-selling novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford have written a "bible" for a new daytime soap opera. The current working title is Saints and Sinners.

January 1, 1999 - As The World Turns has been nominated for Outstanding Daytime Drama for this year's 30th NAACP Image Awards. Lonette McKee (Sara Ruth) has been nominated in the Outstanding Daytime Actress category. The awards will be presented on February 13th and 14th in Pasadena, California.

January 2, 1999 - Remember the second annual Doofus Awards at http://www.soapcity.com/? Well, the results are in. ATWT didn't "win" any of the categories, but the show was named in their favorite write-in votes (for those categories and Doofii they overlooked in their nominations). The honorable mentions went to:

  • Queen of the Doofii: Molly, ATWT
  • Biggest Doofa of All; Carly, ATWT
  • I'm a doofa and I love it: Molly, ATWT

January 5, 1999 - The Grammy Award nominations were announced today. Lauryn Hill (ex-Kira Johnson, ATWT), who is now a R&B singer and songwriter, led the field with 10 nominations. Lauryn already has two Grammy awards, she won them while a member of the R&B trio the Fugees. The awards will be handed out on February 24 in Los Angeles. The nominations included one for album of the year for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and for best female R&B vocal performance on Doo Wop (That Thing).

January 5, 1999 - Congratulations to Kelley Menighan Hensley (Emily) and Jon Hensley (Holden) on the birth of their first child. Sophie May Hensley was born on December 23, 1998. She weighed 5 lbs., 8 oz. Sophie was born just three days after her due date. She was born on Martha Byrne's 29th birthday (she plays Lily), which is what Kelley had hoped, since the pair is good friends with their castmate. Menighan will be on maternity leave until March. Hensley has already returned to work. Look for Emily to be in scenes for a few weeks, as she has pre-taped many episodes.

January 5, 1999 - Back on another cover is Jordana Brewster (ex-Nikki). This time she's on the latest cover of Spin magazine.

January 22, 1999 - Martha Byrne (Lily), Colleen Zenk Pinter (Barbara), and Mark Pinter (ex-Brian McColl) were some of the honorees at producer David Gest's American Cinema Awards Foundation Christmas Musical Spectacular. They were honored for their humanitarian work. The Pinters spend a lot of their time working for national chapters of Easter Seals, the March of Dimes, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Martha Byrne chairs an annual fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

January 23, 1999 - Soap Opera Update reports Grant Aleksander will be directing at AW or ATWT, in addition to portraying Phillip Spaulding on Guiding Light.

January 23, 1999 - Soaps in Depth conducted a poll in a recent CBS edition. Of the top three most-watched soaps, As The World Turns ranked third by their readers.

January 25, 1999 - Hurray for Parker Posey (ex-Tess Shelby). Soap Opera Weekly reports Posey as saying in a recent interview that her soap co-stars were the "hardest working actors I've ever worked with." Many ex-soap stars (and their agents) want to forget they ever appeared on a soap, even if the job helped further their career.

January 25, 1999 - As The World Turns has been nominated in the daytime drama category for a Writers Guild of America award. The awards will be announced on February 20.

February 1, 1999 - In the latest issue of Soap Opera Magazine, Lucy Johnson, CBS daytime senior vice president, says to expect more classic episodes of ATWT in March. March marks the anniversary of CBS celebrating 10 years of being No. 1 in the daytime ratings, and the classic episodes are CBS' gift for long-time viewers.

February 5, 1999 - More details have emerged on CBS' plans for March. Lucy Johnson' credits romantic continuity with one of the reason's CBS has been successful in daytime. "Our most popular couples in '89 are still on the air in '99 and still have significant impact on storylines," Johnson is quoted as saying in TV Guide. Therefore, from March 15 to 26, expect to see many flashbacks. Holden and Lily from ATWT were specifically named. It is unknown at this time if both flashbacks and full classic episodes will be shown or just flashbacks.

February 5, 1999 - Due to financial reasons, American Media will no longer be publishing Soap Opera Magazine and Soap Opera News. Some of their trademarks have been sold to Primedia Inc., publisher of Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly.

February 26, 1999 - Here are highlights of the Michael Park chat, held on Yahoo on 2/24. The chat was sponsored by Soap City and these highlights are courtesy of Adri-Anne. Thanks Adri-Anne!

  1. When asked about his favorite storyline, he said it was when he was trapped in the cabin with Carly. Said he'd never had an opportunity to act being frozen to death before -- it was definitely a wild time.
  2. When asked if he saw himself with Carly in the near future he said he wouldn't venture to say. Right now he is having a great time with Julia and having Carly jump in after him all the time.
  3. One of his favorite TV shows is the King of Queens. He's very fond of Jerry Stiller -- said he met him one time and he said lots of profound and interesting things to him.
  4. Asked if he liked the way the Jack/Brad storyline turned out -- he said it was fantastic -- just perfect in his opinion. He said that he and Nick Kokotakis (Brad) didn't really get along at first when he came on the show (kind of like their characters) but that when the characters bonded, so did they -- became very close. And now he's gone and a piece of Michael is gone too.
  5. Asked about his son, he's 20 months -- doing new tricks every day. The favorite part of his day is coming home and having him run across the room to him.
  6. Asked about any more Broadway shows -- he's just taking it day to day. Some offers have come across the table that he can't fit in though.
  7. He says Annie Parisse is a blast and a real pro. He says she's going to be a huge huge star some day. He can't say enough great things about her. He mentioned several of the cast as being very funny -- especially Don Hastings (Bob).
  8. Asked if he sees any SOD awards for ATWT or himself. He said that Soap Opera Digest's is basically a DOOL fan letter so he doesn't see a lot of awards for the show. But he's going to enjoy attending anyway. He has a Prada suit to wear that he thinks is awesome. Normally he wears a regular tux but he thinks this is really special -- he can't wait.
  9. Asked about seeing Daniel Markel (David Stenbeck)...said he'd just talked to him about 2 hours before. They are meeting for lunch in LA. Said not to worry about Daniel -- he is dabbling in real estate deals and writing a script with a friend. Says he could sell refrigerators to Eskimos - never worry about Daniel.
  10. About the actor who had taught him the most on the show, he said it was Benjamin Hendrickson (Hal). Also he learns something new from Larry Bryggman (John) every day. He had good things to say about Maura West (Carly) also. He said what was really amazing was how much he learned from Annie Parisse -- and she was so much younger than him.
  11. How did he get the job on ATWT? The producer attends a lot of shows in Manhattan. He had the good luck to be in several really good musicals: Carousel, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Violet, etc. and when they wanted to cast Jack they called him and asked him to audition.
  12. He wants to stick with ATWT but he also wants to do a movie -- not for the money but for "for his soul," to learn something.
  13. The only reason he'd move to prime time would be for the money -- he thinks his soap experience is very good and he's learning lots from it. He said one of the hardest things to learn as a theater actor was to make his gestures and movements small and intimate for the camera. Asked about a role on ER -- he said he'd hate to have to spout those medical terms. Maybe he'd be better on one of the teen shows. He'd love to do a movie with James Van Der Beek (Dawson's Creek, once appeared on ATWT as Kirk's son) -- one of his best friends. He said James played his younger brother (in a play I think) and they ended up feeling that way about each other -- still one of his best friends.
  14. He and his wife watch the show...he studies the tapes to try to learn from his mistakes.
  15. Asked about his bad habits he says he's stubborn and he stresses out a lot. Said that Jon Hensley (Holden) had taught him a lot about handling stress. He says that Jon is just the coolest calmest person -- and a really nice guy. He said that Kelley Menighan-Hensley (Emily) started back to work and looks just amazing. You had to stop and remember she'd been gone. Said Jon and Kelley's baby was just beautiful.
  16. Talked a little about his golf game -- said his goal was to play more golf and to beat Jon Hensley this year. Place he'd love to play golf is the old St. Andrews course in Scotland.
  17. Said he doesn't get online much -- just no time. And he feels guilty because that means he doesn't interact with his online fan club as much as he'd like to.
  18. He did not take voice lessons. Started his acting career in kindergarten with one line, then at 16 did a high school production where he sang. Also sang some in college but it was not his main focus. His mom taught him to sing. He takes lessons now sometimes when he's preparing for something special or an audition.
  19. Loves living in NYC -- his apartment is about 10 minutes from the studio. He says you can order anything anytime and have it delivered. He said he could call the deli on the corner at 4 am and have a 6-pack brought up if that's what he wanted.

March 10, 1999 - I have started an "I Love Lucy" campaign with the goal being to get the writers and producers to drop the storyline of ruining Lucinda's character and doing what it takes to get Elizabeth Hubbard back on the show. March 26, 1999 - In the past few weeks, ATWT fan Robert has had four sightings of former ATWT stars in Los Angeles. He saw Michael Swan (ex-Duncan) calling numbers at a charity bingo game at the Stonewall Coffee Shop in West Hollywood. Robert says "Although he is now on B&B, he was wearing his ATWT jacket." Robert saw Richard Bekins (ex-Michael Alcott, Neal's ex-husband) at a gym in West Hollywood. The next day he spotted Michael Louden (ex-Duke) at a coffeehouse in Santa Monica. The day after that he saw Shawn Christian (ex-Mike) at the Virgin Megastore on Sunset Boulevard. Robert said "I didn't say hello to any of them, but they all looked great." With all those sightings, Robert must have wondered if he someone ended up in Oakdale! Thanks for sharing your sightings report Robert!

March 27, 1999 - Wondering what Frank Runyeon (ex-Steve Andropoulos) is up to now? Well, he performs all around the United States telling the story of Jesus as depicted in the New Testament in his show Afraid!: The Gospel of Mark. His next performance will be at the Cincinnati Art Museum on April 16. Online reviews give the show high praises.

March 28, 1999 - King World and CBS are discussing a merger. King World produces Hollywood Squares, Oprah Winfrey Show, The Roseanne Show, Jeopardy! and Inside Edition. In most markets the talk shows and game shows run before or after the soap operas. If CBS takes over King World, they will push these shows to the affiliates. This may provide even more stability for CBS' daytime line up.

March 29, 1999 - Lauryn Hill (ex-Kira Johnson) took home three awards at the 13th Annual Soul Train Music Awards. The hip-hop singer and rapper also shared the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for entertainer of the year with R. Kelly during Friday's awards. Hill, 23, won best R&B/soul or rap album of the year for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which also won for best female R&B/soul album. Hill's Doo Wop (That Thing) captured best music video.

April 1, 1999 - Soaps writer Lynda Hirsch reports: "So why did President Clinton hold his Friday [March 19th] press conference at 4 p.m. EST instead of the announced 2 p.m.? According to inside sources, it was suggested he not bump soap-opera episodes. Although the president has not had a regular press conference since April 1998, continuing coverage of his impeachment trial and break-ins for the latest word on who said what caused dozens of soap-opera pre-emptions."

April 6, 1999 - In the latest issue of Soap Opera Weekly Michael Sabatino (Peter Wentworth) comments on the casting and crew changes at ATWT and how many people have come from All My Children: "I walk in and it's like, Wow, what's the name of this show again?"

April 8, 1999 - ABC will launch a new soap opera channel early next year. They have been running tests of the channel in Houston and Chicago. The channel is expected to air the ABC soaps, seen on affiliate networks during the day, in the primetime hours. Tests have shown that more people are tuning in when there's a flexible schedule of when fans are able to view the shows. The soap channel will air classic episodes, new movies and some original programming. It may also air cancelled ABC soaps such as Ryan's Hope. The big question is, will ATWT (past or current episodes) ever run on the soap opera channel? It's possible. The sticking point is, will it take away viewers from CBS affiliates? They have been working on a complicated deal where affiliates are compensated for the soap channel to air non-ABC shows. Stay tuned!

In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest a "Procter & Gamble insider" states: "It's just not possible to let actors write their own storylines. Suggest? Absolutely. But dictate? No way."

April 9, 1999 - Eileen Fulton has written another novel, the title of this one is Soap Opera. It is to be released this summer.

April 12, 1999 - NBC announced today that it is cancelling Another World after being on the air for 35 years. AW will last air on June 25. Passions, a new NBC soap, will debut on July 5. Another World is produced by Procter & Gamble, the same company that produces As The World Turns. Passions will compete directly with ATWT, airing at 2 pm EST. Some One Life to Live fans are unhappy with their show and are planning a boycott of the show during May sweeps. Some of them plan on tuning into ATWT. This move may backfire for OLTL fans, but will it help ATWT?

April 12, 1999 - Andy Kavovit (ex-Paul) says he doesn't plan on returning to As The World Turns. Kavovit is currently trying to raise money for his new independent film, S.P.O.T. Filming has not yet begun on the project.

Columbia TriStar produces Y&R and DAYS (with Corday Productions) and is partners with Procter & Gamble on the international distribution of P&G's soaps ATWT, GL, and AW. The channel is expected to begin broadcasting in January 2000.

May 11, 1999 - Kudos to the Atlanta CBS affiliate. They broke into ATWT today because the president was in town and part of ATWT wasn't seen. At the end of the newscast they stated ATWT would be replayed during late night. They also put a ticker on the screen with a "VCR ALERT" notifying fans the show would be replayed in its entirety at 2:10 am. Not only is it May Sweeps period, but it's good to see a CBS affiliate interested in keeping its daytime viewers.

May 11, 1999 - From now until May 21 there is an online auction to benefit ZazAngels. Soap memorabilia is up for auction, including a tour of the ATWT set. Check out the Beverly Hills Charity Auction.

Lyricists were Olivia Newton-John and Victoria Shaw. The song was written for Lily and Holden's wedding. The acting awards will be given out Friday, May 21. The Emmy awards will air on CBS.

May 19, 1999 - Soap Opera Weekly's Linda Susman, ATWT's Eileen Fulton (Lisa), AMC's Cameron Mathison (Ryan), OLTL's Frank Valentini (Supervising Producer), and GL's Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown (Head Writers) will discuss the phenomenon of daytime television, effect of fans on storylines, how the genre has changed and more in a seminar today. Sons of Thunder, the CBS series that had a try-out this Spring which starred James Wlcek (ex-Linc Lafferty), did not earn a slot on CBS' fall schedule and is considered "cancelled." Kim Ulrich (ex-Diana McColl) has been cast as Ivy Crane on NBC's new soap opera, Passions.

May 19, 1999 - For those who had been missing Emily Stewart and wondering where she was, the reason why she hadn't been seen on screen for a little while was because Kelley Menighan Hensley had gone on vacation. She took baby Sophie and went to Puerto Rico, where her parents met her and they enjoyed some family time. Jon Hensley (Holden) had to stay in New York and work.

May 28, 1999 - I previously reported Michael Woods (Alec) and the actor James Woods were brothers. This is incorrect. James Woods does have a brother named Michael, but it is not the same Michael Woods that is on ATWT. I apologize for the error.

May 28, 1999 - Christopher Goutman, last executive producer of Another World and former director for ATWT, has been named as ATWT's new executive producer. Goutman replaces Felicia Minei-Behr, who has held the role of ATWT's executive producer since November 1996. The change goes into effect June 7.

June 4, 1999 - Some behind the scenes changes at the show. Casting director Mikie Heilbrun is being replaced by former Another World casting director Jimmy Bohr. Producers Terry Cacavio, Jennifer Minda and Regina DiMartino, will be exiting. Carol Shure is coming to the show as a producer. Production designer Kevin Rupnik (who remodeled Tom and Margo's house and did the Christmas Oakdale mall set) is leaving. Music director Sybil Costello also exits. Today is their last day with the show. It is not unexpected to make crew changes when a new executive producer is hired. Felicia Minei-Behr brought in many of her former co-workers when she joined ATWT. Mikie Heilbrun is just one of Felicia's hires. In fact, Felicia hired so many former AMC crew members, Michael Sabatino commented the show, from a backstage point of view, looked like AMC to him.

June 6, 1999 - Past and present cast attending the ATWT fan club luncheon held today in New York City: Michael Park (Jack), Cassandra Creech (Denise), Peter Parros (Ben), Don Hastings (Bob), Lesli Kay Sterling (Molly), Keith Coulouris (Reid), Ellen Dolan (Margo), Eileen Fulton (Lisa), Ben Jorgensen (Chris), Craig Lawlor (Adam), and Yvonne Perry (Rosanna). Many cast members did not attend the luncheon as they were out of town. This is because ATWT is dark this week for the cast and crew to take a vacation.

June 7, 1999 - E! Online ranks the top ten daytime studs of all time and two ATWT's (one current, one soon-to-be) made the list! On the list: Holden Snyder and Cass Winthrop.

June 19, 1999 - Patrick Howe is ATWT's new production designer. Ron Brawer is the new music producer/director. James Kowal joins the show as a music director. The search is on for a new headwriter. Lorraine Broderick will leave as headwriter as soon as a replacement is found. Wendy Fishman (ex-CBS executive, who came up with the GL storyline to clone Reva) and writer Leah Laiman are two people who are being considered for the position.

June 25, 1999 - Jon Hensley (Holden) was chosen as one of the top five actors (coming in at number five) in the latest Soaps In Depth poll. Lily and Holden were the fifth most popular couple. No other ATWT actors, actresses, or couples were chosen in the poll. If you'd like to vote in the current Soaps In Depth poll, visit the SID Poll page.

June 25, 1999 - Soap Opera Update reports Ben Jorgensen (Christopher) and his girlfriend, Caroline Peiser, are engaged and will be married in the near future.

June 25, 1999 - Kudos to Chicago's WBBM-TV. They play ATWT at 1:43 a.m. if it is interrupted, due to a news story. I hope this becomes a trend among the networks.

June 29, 1999 - ATWT has a new headwriter. Leah Laiman has been hired and is already at work. Laiman crafted the Lumina story for Another World. She is a former headwriter for Another World and Days of Our Lives.

In an online chat I asked Michael Logan, soaps writer for TV Guide, what he thought about Laiman coming to ATWT. He replied, "I'm no fan of Ms. Laiman's work, though I have no huge quarrels with her contributions to the last few months of Another World. I have come to feel in my many years of observing daytime drama, that a soap usually has only one dymanic, driving, creative ball-busting force, and it's either the executive producer or the head writer. [Rare] is the show that can support two such forces. So the hiring of Ms. Laiman doesn't surprise me, it doesn't disappoint me. It doesn't excite me, but I do get the feeling that this kind of hiring is probably necessary considering what a powerhouse Chris Goutman [ATWT's new executive producer] is."

Logan later commented, "I know there is a lot of concern that Goutman will turn ATWT into AW, but I believe this is silly hysteria. He has shown himself in a very short period of time on AW to be quite magical...I only wish TPTB in daytime were looking for and hiring more Goutman's -- talents who have spent many years working in daytime drama, and really GET it."

June 29, 1999 - Tom Wiggin (ex-Kirk) is joining Guiding Light in a recurring role. He'll first air in late July or early August. His first airdate will be on the Soap Opera Events Calendar when it's been announced and also in my weekly newsletter.

July 19, 1999 - Anthony Herrera (James) thanks everyone for the prayers and support. He is doing well and hopes to be back in New York by the fall.

July 19, 1999 - The cast and crew of ATWT had an extra week off in order for the producer and writer to re-focus. They had the week of July 5th off. They show is usually 2 to 3 weeks ahead due to breaks in the summer and at Christmas, but with so many news interruptions lately they were a month ahead. Hence, they had "room" to go "dark" the week of July 5th.

July 19, 1999 - Ming-Na Wen (ex-Lien) will reprise the role of Deborah Chen on NBC's ER in the fall.

July 19, 1999 - Congratulations to Paolo Seganti (ex-Damian) and his girlfriend, Carlotta. They are expecting a baby in August.

July 21, 1999 - In the most current issue of Soaps In Depth, no ATWT actors or actresses were voted in the top five. Julia Lindsey and Jack Snyder were the only ATWT couple making the top five list. To vote, visit the Soaps In Depth poll page.

July 22, 1999 - With NBC cancelling Another World, ATWT's producer Chris Goutman comments on what fans can do for their favorite show in an article in the July 13th issue of Soap Opera Digest. Goutman says, "I think you have to be a true fan, and you have to tell other people to be a fan. Word of mouth: Tell your friends, tell your kids, tell your cousins. You've got to tell everyone that this is good stuff. You can watch this, and it will enrich your life in ways that are unexpected. I think that the community that soap opera celebrates, bringing people together while watching family-oriented things, has to be re-created in a lot of ways. We have to go forward and start telling stories in different ways; unexpected and surprising ways, which we need to do but are not doing. We have to grow our audience. But they have to help us." The article, which was on how to help prevent your soaps from being cancelled, included a reprint of Douglas Marland's How Not To Wreck A Show article. Marland is a former ATWT headwriter.

July 28, 1999 - Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda) is aware of the I Love Lucy campaign and of the letters received on her behalf. She was very touched. If she had won the Emmy award, she was planning on thanking the fans.

To vote in the most recent poll visit the SID Poll page.

Soap Opera Digest August 11, 1999 - ATWT characters Lily, Holden, Melinda, and Lucinda are featured on the latest cover of Soap Opera Digest. The cover is great and the story inside the magazine also includes some new photos. If this issue doesn't sell well, don't expect another ATWT cover story on SOD for awhile.

Editor-in-Chief Lynn Leahey's column in this issue also focuses on ATWT. Leahey writes "Sometimes, kicking up a fuss pays off. All you AS THE WORLD TURNS fans who never gave up trying to convince your show to do whatever it took to get Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda) to return deserve a big pat on the back because it worked! You spoke loudly and clearly, and ATWT listened. Hubbard may not conform to those precious demographics, but she's important to you, and that was good enough for ATWT." Leahey adds "I hope ATWT is rewarded for its efforts with roof-raising ratings!" In the cover story article Christopher Goutman, ATWT's executive producer, comments, "You open the show with Liz and you've got the audience hooked for the rest of the hour."

Let's thank (and reward) SOD for this cover story by purchasing this issue! It's an easy way for fans to support the show.

August 11, 1999 - Larry Bryggman (John) is off on a one month vacation.

August 11, 1999 - Disgusted by sex-soaked and violent television programs, 11 major advertisers announced today they will pay to have writers develop family-friendly shows for consideration by the WB network. The advertisers, including Procter & Gamble, which owns ATWT, say they are taking the steps after finding fewer and fewer prime-time programs during which they feel comfortable selling their products. The advertising group funding the new programs say they want a better balance of programming. ``We're not saying the other stuff should go away,'' said Gretchen Briscoe, a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble, "we're just saying we need more options.'' For the full story, click here.

August 12, 1999 - If you have a moment today, if you've been a participant in the I Love Lucy Campaign (ILLC), e-mail CBS and thank them (in your own words) for bringing Lucinda back to ATWT. It's a good opportunity to show them our appreciation and ATWT does get a mail report from CBS.

August 12, 1999 - Many of you may have noticed that today's episode brought Leah Laiman's credit as headwriter, replacing Lorraine Broderick. Carolyn Culliton is now co-headwriter and should be credited soon. Addie Walsh, longtime writer for ATWT, has left the show. Dear Friends,

The I Love Lucy Campaign was an obvious success because I'm back in Oakdale and ready to start some trouble. But you know Lucinda, trouble always find her - don't worry I can take and dish it out.

Thank you so much again you really have made me feel special and wanted.

Sincerely
Elizabeth Hubbard

September 3, 1999 - Chris Goutman comments on some of the changes he's made and storylines he's planning in the Sept. 14, 1999 issue of Soaps In Depth. Some of his comments:

  • He got rid of the character of Brad because he felt the audience had a hard time getting a handle on the character with the three different actors playing the role in three months.
  • He said he doesn't want the show to have "one monolithic villian." He said there "will be no more Reid/David" and that fan favorite, Daniel Markel, will not be returning.
  • He felt Ben Jorgensen was miscast as Christopher Hughes. He feels Jorgensen is a talented actor, but wants more of a "romanctic leading man" quality with this role. He said Korver "knocked our socks off during his audition."
  • He's introducing new men for Carly and Lily and bringing back Abigail. Goutman also said "I'm very intrigued with bringing on someone like Brian (sic) Montgomery, who was Craig and Sierra's son." (Their sons name is Bryant).
  • Goutman feels Cass and Lila don't have any long-term future on the show at this time. Cass will return to help Eddie. Goutman commented "I'm not going to bring on AW people for the sake of bringing them on. I think ATWT has a very particular audience."
  • As for the future, Goutman said, "I hope to see a show in which you have an incredibly vibrant cast involved in incredibly vibrant stories. This is a show that can take some chances and be adventurous, but at the same time be true to who and what it is. I think we'll be able to do that in a very short time. That's my wish. I think we can have a lot of fun."
