May 14, 1998 - Helen Wagner (Nancy) fell in the shower and had to have seven stiches above her eye. She had to report to work the next day and the accident was written into the show. On the 20th, look for Nancy to mention slipping in the shower and pointing out her stitches. Helen had a bad black eye, but she said the make up people did a good job of covering it up. May 14, 1998 - Susan Batten (ex-Connor) will be marrying Truitt Bell in a private ceremony this month. It'll be held in North Carolina. Batten has a new business - The Southern Food Company. May 14, 1998 - Soap Opera News reports that Scott DeFreitas (Andy) is confident that he'll be on the show for awhile, so much so that he rented a house in Connecticut with some friends. Scott was quoted as saying he's happy that him and Jordana Brewster (Nikki) will have a romance, even if she ends up leaving the show. He said he's also glad that he'll be around for the birth of Martha Byrne's first child (due tomorrow, as of this writing there's been no news). May 14, 1998 - Brian Bloom (ex-Dusty) has filmed a pilot for Fox. It's called Day Break. He plays Dr. Harry Day. We'll have to wait and see if it gets picked up for the fall schedule. May 15, 1998 - A bit of an ironic happening at the Emmy awards tonight. ATWT's headwriters, Lorraine Broderick and Hal Corley, won Emmy awards tonight as part of the All My Children writing team. The Emmy was for Outstanding Writing Team. Talk about an awkward moment! It was actually the second awkward moment of the evening related to ATWT. Nathaniel Marston (Eddie) and Lesli Kay Sterling (Molly) went in the wrong direction when preparing to hand out the Emmy they presented. Lesli graciously laughed about it and hugged the winner (a good save). May 19, 1998 - The pilot that Shawn Christian (ex-Mike) filmed, titled Wind on Water, has been picked up by NBC for their fall schedule. Wind on Water is scheduled to air on Saturday evenings at 8 pm EST. Shawn plays an arrogant surfer named Val Poole. June 5, 1998 - Betty Rea, longtime casting director for Proctor and Gamble, is retiring. She "found" many well-known actors and actresses during her many years with the show. June 5, 1998 - Although not yet official, word is that ATWT is going to be moving its studios to the SoHo area in New York City. New studios are supposed to be built. Since they'll house both Proctor and Gamble shows ATWT and Guiding Light, maybe my dream of a ATWT and GL cross-over story will happen. Both shows are set in fictional midwestern towns. June 8, 1998 - Kelley Menighan Hensley (Emily) and her husband, Jon Hensley (Holden), are expecting their first child. Kelley is currently in contract negotiations with ATWT, her contract expires this summer. Will she decide not to renew her contract? Only time will tell! June 10, 1998 - Rumors were flying that Andrew Kavovit (ex-Paul) might return to ATWT after The Magnificent Seven, the CBS series he was one of the stars in, wasn't on CBS' fall 1998 schedule. Published reports said that Andrew was pursuing other projects and not considering an ATWT return, even if they did ask him back. However, The Magnificent Seven has been brought back to life by CBS. They've ordered new episodes of the series and plan to use it as a mid-season replacement. June 10, 1998 - The SOD Editor couldn't make the chat yesterday, but Michael Logan (TV Guide soap's columnist) joined us as a surprise guest. Flashbacks and guest stars are reportedly being planned. June 15, 1998 - The June 23, 1998 issue of Soap Opera News has a nice article and first photo of Martha Byrne's son, Michael. Martha is quoted as saying the doctor said baby Michael was so comfortable in the womb, he would have been in there for another week. She said she was calm and didn't feel large, although the baby was two weeks late. Martha states her Caesarian was rough, but she's doing fine and is very proud. She's breastfeeding and the baby is doing well. June 18, 1998 - In a ceremony to be held at Planet Hollywood (New York) on September 14, 1998, ex-P&G Casting Director Betty Rea, Eileen Fulton (Lisa, ATWT), Ruth Warrick (ex-Janet Johnson, GL, better known as Phoebe on AMC), and Gloria Monty (ex-producer of GH) will be inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame. Bell, Douglas Marland (ex-writer for ATWT and GL), Agnes Nixon, Ted Corday, Betty Corday, Procter & Gamble (producer of ATWT and GL), and Guiding Light. June 19, 1998 - The latest on Kelley Menighan Hensley's pregnancy is that she is due around Christmastime. No word on whether the pregnancy will be written into the show. In the Soap Opera Digest issue dated 6/30/98 there is a photo shoot and article with Jon Hensley, Michael Park, and Daniel Markel (Holden, Jack, and David). ATWT is featured on the cover of the 6/30/98 issue of Soap Opera Weekly. June 19, 1998 - Martha Bryne has sent out a notice to those on her mailing list. Attending the baptism were Martha's castmates Jon and Kelley Hensley, Lesli-Kay Sterling, Michael Park, Maura West, and Lisa Brown. August 17, 1998 - No one can ever say Jaime Nicole Dudney (Georgia) doesn't love her cat. According to Soap Opera Weekly, Jaime's cat, Isabella, got lost in California and since Jaime was in the process of moving, when she was found the number on her cat collar had been disconnected. The woman who found her brought her to a shelter where she was adopted. Jaime finally tracked Isabella down, but the young man who had adopted her refused to give the Persian back. He offered to sell the cat to her, but she refused, stating it was her cat and had even been on covers of McCall's and Woman's Day with her mother (country superstar Barbara Mandrell). Jaime had to take the man to court where he finally gave her back the cat. The cover features Brad and Camille, Jack and Julia, and Margo and Eddie along with the headline "Making Love: Two of these couples consummate their relationships on ATWT." By purchasing this issue, it shows your support for ATWT, and gives them incentive to give ATWT more press in the future. October 14, 1998 - Raves this week from Jonathan Reiner, TV Guide's online soaps writers. He writes: "Kudos to Ellen Dolan, Scott Holmes and Kelley Menighan-Hensley (Margo, Tom and Emily) for putting a new spin on ATWT's Hughes/Stewart adultery legacy." October 20, 1998 - For those keeping up with the career of Shawn Christian (ex-Mike), Wind on Water, the primetime NBC series he has a role in, did not due well in the ratings on its premiere night this past Saturday. November 3, 1998 - From the "where are they now?" file: A sharp-eyed ATWT fan was flipping channels yesterday and caught the tail end of an episode of The New Dating Game. Michael Loudon (ex-Duke) was one of the bachelors. He was introduced as "a women's tennis instructor from New York." The viewer said his hair is shorter and he's sporting a goatee and glasses. He wasn't the bachelor chosen. Ahhhh. Well, now we know he's still available! November 6, 1998 - Michael Park (Jack) performs on the original soundtrack of the musical Violet. All of the daytime dramas are nominated as Favorite Show. Ballots are available in the November 24, 1998 issue of Soap Opera Digest. This is the only issue in which the ballots will be printed. This issue goes on sale Tuesday, November 17. The awards ceremony will be held in February in Los Angeles. Click here for the complete list of nominees. November 20, 1998 - As The World Turns will not air on Thanksgiving or the Friday after, November 26 or 27. The show is also "dark" these days, which means the cast and crew are not working. The show is taped two to three weeks in advance in order for the cast and crew to have time off during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Additionally, I will be away for the holiday and these pages will not be updated from Wednesday, November 25 to Sunday, November 29. November 21, 1998 - The Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on CBS on Friday, May 21, 1999. The event will be at the Paramount Theater in New York City. With it being broadcast on CBS, it's a definite possibility that GL will get more publicity during the show. Tickets to the show will be available, although ticket information is not yet known. November 21, 1998 - Next time you're in the check out line, grab a copy of the December 1998/January 1999 issue of Teen People and flip open the cover. AFTRA is the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. November 30, 1998 - Soap Opera Magazine reports Tom Eplin (he plays Jake on Another World) renewed his contract with AW only because it gives him the opportunity to direct -- not only at AW but also possibly at ATWT and/or GL (all three shows are produced by Procter and Gamble). December 1, 1998 - Here's a tidbit from Liz Smith's November 30, 1998 column: "In a holiday season that will see an astounding 100 films seeking an audience, it is remarkable that Dimension has landed a record 3,000 locations for its much-anticipated high-school sci-fi thriller, The Faculty. Opening Christmas Day, it stars Jordana Brewster, who looks a lot like Demi Moore, as a student who suspects some of her teachers are aliens." Obviously Brewster has made an impact on reviewers of this flick, as it stars seven other young actors, including Elijah Wood and Usher Raymond. Also appearing in the film: Piper Laurie, Bebe Neuwirth, Jon Stewart, and Salma Hayek.
December 1, 1998 - Time to vote again! Run out and pick up TV Guide. Inside is a ballot for the First Annual TV Guide Awards. You can vote for your favorite daytime drama. Ballots are in the November 28 and December 5 issues of TV Guide. December 2, 1998 - Vote online for the second annual Doofus Awards by going to http://www.soapcity.com/. The awards are to honor those soap opera characters who have behaved in ways one cannot comprehend — stupid, ignorant, or just a real dud. Some of the nominees are from ATWT. At the very end you can submit your write-in votes, as some characters from ATWT were left out of certain categories they should definitely be in. Voting ends on Wednesday, December 9, 1998. Winners will be announced on Friday, December 11. December 2, 1998 - Interested in attending the Soap Opera [Digest] Awards in Los Angeles on February 26, 1999? Tickets for the Friday event, which is being held at the Universal Ampitheatre, can be purchased now through Ticketmaster outlets and the Universal Ampitheatre Box Office. You can call the box office at (213) 252-8497. December 4, 1998 - According to TV Guide Online, NBC "will almost definitely go with a four-soup line up when Passions premieres." Passions is the new NBC soap by James Reilly, set to premiere on July 5, 1999. Many have wondered if NBC would cancel Sunset Beach or Another World to make room for Passions on their daytime schedule. For now, word is, that Another World is safe. I mention this because Another World is produced by Procter & Gamble, who also produce As The World Turns. Happenings on P&G's other shows (they also produce Guiding Light) sometimes effect ATWT. December 7, 1998 -The voting never ends! You can vote for the Best Online Newsletter. December 13, 1998 - Soap Opera Weekly named Camille's breast cancer storyline as one of the "most socially relevant" soap stories for 1998 in their December 22, 1998 issue. They gave Lucinda a "mind your own business" nod. "What a waste" was given to ATWT for firing Daniel Markel and having David go psycho. They voted ATWT as "most improved show." Lisa/John/Barbara was voted "most unlikely triangle." Lisa was named "most forgiving." They named Carly/Jack/Julia as one of the best triangles. "Thank God it's over" goes to Lily/Holden/Molly triangle. Lily and Holden's nuptials were named in the most anticipated wedding category. Tom was named in the "dumb, dumber, dumbest and beyond dumb" category. "Most puzzling storyline" was writing off Samantha and Kirk after bringing Georgia to town. They said David's exit was one of the best exits (yes, it kind of contradicts their choice for "what a waste" but I don't vote, just report!). December 13, 1998 - Robert Scinto, a former All My Children and The City/Loving director, joins ATWT as a director. He fills the role left by Chris Goutman, who is now Another World's executive producer. December 13, 1998 - Soap Opera Digest gives the "Dumbest Male Axing" to ATWT for firing Daniel Markel (he plays David Stenbeck) in their December 22, 1998 issue. They write "Not only was Markel an experiences actor who was well-liked by his co-stars, he was one of ATWT's most ardent supporters." There is hope, Markel continues to tape scenes as David, so maybe ATWT has had a change of heart (or the firing was all a ruse?). See comings for more information. SOD said The Sinking of the Valetta as the "Best Use of a Disaster." The Best Social Issue Story nod was given to ATWT for Camille's Breast Cancer storyline. ATWT was chosen as the Most Improved Show. December 13, 1998 - Lauren Martin-Harkins (Camille) and her husband of three years, Gerry Harkins, have separated. December 17, 1998 - Last year compiling the best and worst poll votes was very time consuming. Visitors to this site have increased greatly, so this year the polling will be done via e-mail only. This will make it easier to tally the results and will help prevent multiple voting. The poll will be sent out to the newsletter subscribers only. If you wish to vote in the poll and are not a newsletter subscriber, you need to join the list now. The poll will go out the week of December 28th. The newsletter is free and you can always unsubscribe after polling is over. For instructions on how to subscribe, read the newsletter page.
