In August 1998, Nancy Hughes celebrated her 80th birthday aboard the Valetta. At first she didn't want to go to the party. She felt everyone had forgotten her birthday, including her daughter Penny and son Don. Her grandson, Tom, talked her into going and told her how important she was to the family. Penny had flown in from England, as a surprise, to celebrate her mom's birthday and Don called. Also present was long-time friend Ellen Stewart.
