In my opinion, it's high time some words were said in praise of Maura West's inimitable portrayal of Carly Tenney. The second Carly stepped into Cal's barn and lit her first on-screen cigarette, thus exposing her true colors as the not-so-goody-two-shoes "cousin" of Rosanna Cabot, I was hooked. In the ensuing months, Maura West created the character of Carly Tenney with such heart, soul and finesse that the role could never be successfully recast. She managed to portray a greedy, conniving, lying little cheat with a heart of gold who did it all for love (okay, okay, let's not forget money) so convincingly that I became absolutely enthralled with her storyline. In fact, I grew to dislike the character of Rosanna, whom I formerly had been rather fond of, simply because I wanted Carly to have Mike instead! It takes true talent to win a viewer over so completely, especially a jaded second generation viewer such as myself. I also enjoyed Lisa's obvious affinity for Carly and the memories it awoke in her about her less than grand beginnings. When Maura left the show in May 1996 to have her baby, I was heartbroken. Of course I supported Maura's decision to put family first, but Carly had departed and I really didn't expect her to return. I officially became an ATWT deserter in about August 1996 (new job, back to school, no time, no Carly) and only just started watching again in September of this year in honor of Maura's return. Maura West possesses true talent and a rare, ethereal beauty that is entirely too big for the TV screen. When she left ATWT last year I did not expect to see her there again; I figured her next appearance would be via Hollywood. I don't know, there's just something about her that brings to mind the old movie divas, like Greta Garbo or Mae West. I think it's inevitable that she will eventually move on to bigger and better things, and her presence and contribution to ATWT should be appreciated and savored while it lasts. I'm a recent inductee to the message boards. So far I'm mostly a lurker but you can count on me to pop up when there's a good Carly confrontation brewing! |
