I don't understand why so many shows in both daytime and primetime seem so intent on cramming hate, violence & revenge down the viewers throats in the name of entertainment. It is NOT what we want, it is all TPTB will give us. According to the Oxford Dictionary & Thesaurus, American edition of 1997, to entertain is to amuse, occupy agreeably, delight, please, contemplate, encourage, or engage; and entertaining is funny, humorous, comical, witty, enjoyable, and pleasing. Very few shows today would fit these definitions. In fact, most could be defined as totally opposite to this. Entertainment is supposed to be something we do to escape from the reality of the world for relaxation and pleasure. My case in point today is As The World Turns. ATWT used to be the one soap that had some values and principles, happily married couples, and a sense of right and wrong. Yes, there were bad people from time to time, but they were stopped and paid for their crimes, and in the end good won out. Now it is about the worst show on daytime. This in my opinion is due to the writers, producers, directors etc., and in no way reflects on the wonderful actors and actresses, who must play the role as they are instructed. Characters are allowed to murder, steal, kidnap pregnant women, drug people, switch babies, sell babies, buy babies, assume other's identities, fake tests, burn bodies, lie about being mugged, steal best friend's husbands, accuse their wives (whom they supposedly love and adore) of things they absolutely know they did not do just to keep their mistress out of jail, beat women, have a baby just for money, and lie about who the baby's father is. I could go on and on. The sad thing is all these story lines are just what has gone on in the last seven or eight months. The few characters who are good people and want to do right are either manipulated by the monsters or are their victims, or are rarely seen. I have watched ATWT since I was a very little girl and have kept track all thru the years. The last couple of years have been the worst. There are great actors and characters and the potential for fun, positive stories at ATWT. Stories that will keep people watching. Sure you can push the envelope a little, but there should be some lines characters don't cross, and speedy consequences if they do, don't drag it out for years. I tape the shows and watch at night and I fast forward through at least 85% to 90% of the scenes most days. If things don't change soon, I will stop taping or watching altogether. I want to be entertained, not horrified, brutalized, and depressed. PLEASE bring back good entertainment! Amaze us with fancy gowns & tuxedos, let Lily or Jack sing once in awhile, show us exotic locations (even if they are just on a stage, due to cost), bring back romance, the sexy love scenes (with a couple who has a caring relationship), as this is so much better that the pillaging, plundering & murder. At the very least, give us some good along with the bad. I want my ETV....that's entertainment.
