Which character do you tune in for? The results of this informal poll might surprise you, as it did me. The question was asked in March 1998. A total of 113 responses were sent in. Eleven of those weren't counted because they mentioned more than one person (and that would give some voters an unfair advantage by allowing them more than one vote). Here are the results of the poll.
One fan's reason why: Lily is my favorite character for many reasons. First of all, I have watched her since the first day she appeared on ATWT. Watching her grow up there and the fact that she reminds me so much of my younger daughter makes her practically a family member. I have also seen Martha Byrne in person a couple of times. She is even more beautiful than she is on screen and is as sweet as she looks. She periodically sends a newsletter to all her fans, sharing her real life as well as her "Lily" life. Those years when she was gone from ATWT, she continued to send newletters so that her fans would know when and where she was appearing. I am really happy that she decided to return to daytime where I get to see her so often.
One fan's reason why: Lucinda is the reason I got hooked on ATWT in the first place. When she first came on the show, she was a much needed balance to the sweetness and light of Kim (though she's great too) and Lisa's bizarre antics (like following Kim and Bob around on their honeymoon!) (But Lisa's great too!) Nobody can match Lucinda when she is in top form. The one-liners, the so-appropriate comebacks and put-downs. She does not suffer fools gladly. Younger would-be tough chicks like Emily should stand back and take a lesson. Also, I like the fact that, underneath all of her bluster, her underlying motivation is always the welfare of her family (of course, she always knows best for them.) Liz Hubbard has great chemistry with a lot of the people she's worked with. It's easy to believe she is Lily's mother, they have great give and take. She also had great chemistry with Craig, Neal, original Sam, and of course, Johnny Dixon! Go Lucinda! Some interesting comments from fans about their favorites: James Stenbeck because he has such history including a time when he appeared to be a good guy. We followed him as he began to deteriorate to the best (and most beloved) villan on daytime. Sometimes my mom and I try to see if there is some human kindness still left in him. Anthony Herrera's performance makes us think that. I hope he stays around for ever. Tom Hughes because he is the most wonderful husband who can sing like no other. He is the most forgiving, loving, caring, gentle, sexy man on the show!!! He loves his wife and kids more than anything and he can cry! A man who can cry is number one in my books! Kim Hughes because she is the heart of life in Oakdale and has connections with almost everyone. Margo Hughes because of her strength and perseverance through tough times; i.e. her rape and mental anguish from Diego. She is a great mom. She is a wonderful friend to people such as Hal and Emily. She tends to be non-judgemental, except where Carly is concerned which tends to be correct. She has strong beliefs, even in the face of losing coworkers as friends. Such as, when Ben accused Teague of being a racist cop. Overall, if she was a real person, she would be someone I would like to know and/or have on my side. I fell in love with Holden Snyder the day he jumped out of Lucinda's hayloft. Bright, sensitive, compassionate, and not bad looking -- no matter what various writers have done to his character -- the Holden that Doug Marland created is the one I always see, and he's the guy for me. Here is the tally of all the replies:
