I have been "participating" on various message boards regarding ATWT for about 8 months now. In the learning stages, I lurked, reading everything. Then as I became more familiar with the boards, I began posting a message here and there. Then I became pretty familiar with the boards and I began posting A LOT more. Sometime along the way, I'm not sure just when, I began to notice the severity of the bashing that goes on on some boards, not all. Most notedly, the bashing of Carly by Jack and Julia fans, and the bashing of Julia by Carly and Jack fans. Carly has been called everything from a witch, a liar, schemer, cheap merchandise wrapped in expensive clothing, and worse. Julia has been referred to as Droolia, boring viewers to death, a liar, a felon for her part in David's death, and comments that she should be kicked off the show, and worse. The point of my article is, why does this kind of thing have to take place? And I'm not saying I'm squeaky clean in this department either, but I have decided to become a little more squeaky. It's pointless, it hurts people's feelings, it reflects poorly upon the actors/actresses that are bashed and upon those who are doing the bashing, and it resolves absolutely nothing. It's one thing to say, "Carly was really wrong to lie to Jack about seeing Julia" or "Julia shouldn't have kept David's death from Jack, she should have put her trust in Jack." It's another to say, "Carly is the lowest of all lows, the worst kind of person, a sneaky, underhanded witch" or "Julia belongs in jail for covering up David's death. She is no better than any other felon." These quotes I am using are merely made up, not any that I have taken from any board or any other place. And believe me, as I know you know, there have been a lot worse. It appears too that Denise, Katie and Tom are getting some brutal bashing and lashing. Of course, it's only a soap opera, and these are not "real" people, but the actors and actresses who portray them are real. I guess I just wish that I could go to a message board and not have to see someone name calling and bashing a character that I happen to like on the show, and since that's how I feel, I'm going to practice what I preach. |
