I started watching As the World Turns one day I was pretending to be sick so I could stay home from school. I continued to watch ATWT for the next 14 years but I am considering turning of the world because it is getting too unbearable to watch. The shows only hope is new head writer Lorraine Broderick whose work starts airing in mid April. The only concern is ATWT’s executive producer Felecia Behr. Ms. Behr has done a poor to mediocre job at best. Ms. Behr’s direction has lacked creativity, believability and continuity. I am writing this in the month of March and it was five years ago that ATWT’s legendary head scribe Douglas Marland passed away. The void his death created on ATWT lasts until this day. For he was the glue that held ATWT together. It was not the executive producer but the head writer. The same executive producer that worked with Mr. Marland was still there after Mr. Marland's death and the show went downhill. It is the writer that is important not the executive producer. Now ATWT is on its fourth head writer under Ms. Behr and if ATWT continues its down ward turn she can be blamed. Perhaps Ms. Behr had incompetent writers to work with but she green lighted the stories that have aired and she is to blame. Ms. Behr and Ms. Broderick worked together at All My Children and their efforts were rewarded with an Emmy. Hopefully this will happen again but ATWT fans have been waiting along time for it to happen. Why has ATWT been so off its axis? Here are some reasons why ATWT has been unbearable to watch: 1) DIEGO MURDER MYSTERY: The worst mystery in ATWT history. No interesting twists, no surprises, no jaw dropping moments. Just one big bomb. Kirk Killed Diego? 2) MOLLY, MOLLY AND MORE MOLLY: No offense to Lesli Kay Sterling but this character stinks. Why the writers and Ms. Behr thought a character that would try and break up one of ATWT’s most popular couples (Holden and Lily) would be liked by the fans is beyond me. This is one of the worst characters ever to appear on ATWT. Molly is now being paired up with David and will be front and center in another storyline that is sure to infuriate fans. 3) THE MOLLY/HOLDEN/LILY/DAMIAN FIASCO: Fans thought that Lily was finally going to have a friend but this friend stabbed her in the back and betrayed her. Then we had countless unoriginal and boring attempts by Molly to breakup Holden and Lily. The return of Damian was a bomb of epic proportions. Having Molly and Damian conspiring to breakup Lily and Holden was bad enough but having Holden believe Lily remarried Damian was absurd. Then there was the night that Holden spent with Molly that made most fans furious. Then there was Molly’s suicide attempt, her fake pregnancy, her attempted rape of Holden, blaming Holden for beating her up and letting him be arrested and put in jail. Worst off all Molly goes unpunished for her crimes. Fans saw Molly having flashbacks of Teague beating her up but are now supposed to believe that she was confused and she should be let off the hook? Fans are supposed to like a character and storyline like this? 4) KIM’S HEART SURGERY: What could have been a wonderful story ended up as a disaster. This storyline was dropped. Kim had her surgery and she was fine. So many things could and should have been done with this storyline but nothing was. Kathy Hayes (Kim) deserves a major storyline of her own. She does not deserve to play second fiddle to Molly and LKS. 5) LILY AND HOLDEN’S WEDDING: What should have been a wonderful event was ruined by Molly/Holden/Lily storyline. The wedding should have taken place during November sweeps and not January. They should have opened their wallets and gone on location to some beautiful country church and brought back as many former cast members as they could. But the wedding was a dud. Totally ruined by Molly and her antics. 6) BEN/CAMILLE AND LEW: There was no need for the character of Lew. Ben and Camille could have been a beautiful love story. Lew was not needed to cause tension between Ben and Camille. The race issue with Teague was there to cause plenty of tension and turmoil for them. One thing that could have gotten in between Ben and Camille was Camille going back to school or Ben’s long hours at the Clinic. Lew was never needed. 7) THE FIRING OF ALLYSON RICE-TALYOR (ART): One of the worst things that has happened under Ms. Behr was the firing of ART. Fan’s became outraged over this idiotic firing. 8) DAMIAN THE PRIEST: Damian a priest? There was no point in bringing back the character of Damian. Especially since fans were happy that Holden and Lily were finally back together. It was especially bad because a month before Damian was brought back from the dead James Stenbeck was found out to be alive. 9) CAMILLE AND NIKKI GO TO COLLEGE: It would have been interesting to see a teenager go to college and see what she experiences and who she meets. Many people decide to go back to college later in life. Camille’s storyline could have been used as to explore this but nothing ever came of it. How difficult it is to hold a full time job, go to school and study. She (Camille) could have been an inspiration for a fan to go back to school. Once again a storyline that had promise and nothing was ever done with it. 10) OAKDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT AS MORONS: The OPD never solves a crime. Whether it be Diego’s murder, Molly’s beating or the church fire. 11) THE CHURCH FIRE: What should have been a storyline about racism turned out to be the “Who beat up Molly storyline.” The church fire was not done to explore race problems but a catalysis for the John and Barbara storyline, Kim’s 25th Anniversary and away to keep Lily and Holden apart. 12) WHERE IS THE ORIGINALITY? Where is the originality? Where is the creative storyline? When can we see a story that we haven’t seen before? We can we have an amazing plot twist? When can we have a chill run done or spine over something that we see on the show? There is an upcoming storyline that has to do with Tom and Margo having marital problems. When haven't we seen that two or three times before? 13) RESEARCH: It is apparent that very little research is done on ATWT. Things happen in the law and law enforcement that would never happen in the real world. The same goes for the world of medicine and business. 14) CONTINUITY: There is none on ATWT. They are constantly rewriting the history on ATWT. We all know that Lily is Holden’s first love but all of a sudden Molly was Holden’s first love. We can not forget our history. History is something that should never be forgotten and NEVER be changed. 15) THE REAL WORLD: No more unrealistic storylines. How about everyday issues faced by everyday people. Whether the issues be health, marriage, relationships, friends, business, murder, etc. they should always be based on reality. How about having people work on the show? Remember when Lucinda went to work at Walsh Enterprises or WorldWide everyday? I could go on and on. I hope ATWT can get back on track and Ms. Broderick can give us back our show and out the world back into orbit. |
