Between January 10th and January 16th, visitors to this web site were polled on the best and worst of 1997. The results can be seen on the Best and Worst of 1997 poll results page. Many stated their pleasure about their old favorites returning (Andy and Carly especially) and would like to see more of the core families (Snyders, Hughes, Stewarts) brought back to Oakdale, with stories centered around them and not newcomers. Many also commented they'd rather see more stories involving the veterans of the show, talent going to waste. Here are some of the more interesting comments sent along with poll choices. This is your opinion - what you had to say about the show last year:
Lily/Holden:
- I am glad to see after 13 years that my favorite characters are finally getting married. -GJ
- I have been a fan of ATWT since I was a teenager and have been waiting forever for Lily and Holden to get together and make it stick. -KA
- Let Lily and Holden find happiness finally! -BI
- I would like to finally see Lily and Holden happy and GET RID OF MOLLY. -SI
Kirk:
One storyline fans are hoping will be resolved, since the resolution thus far has been so flat, is "Who Shot Diego?" These two comments reflect the majority of the fan's feelings who responded to the poll:
- I chose the Diego storyline as the best because it made my heart pound and my palms sweat all the way up to the wedding day! After he was shot it went downhill fast and I'm still annoyed that Kirk was supposedly the one who shot Diego. I still don't believe it! -MA
- Worst Villian: Kirk Anderson (a killer? puhleeze) -JB
Comments about Actors/Actresses:
- I think that Martha Byrne and Jon Hensley make the whole soap, I watch them all the time. I am very dedicated as a fan to the show!!! I think it is going to be boring when Martha Byrne goes off the show to have her baby, but I wish her all the luck and hope things go well for her and her new baby, and I also hope she returns real soon! CONGRATULATIONS MARTHA BYRNE AND GOOD LUCK!!! -BI
Molly:
- Please bring the Molly madness to an end. -TI
- Enough with Molly and her antics. -UL
- Get past this Molly thing. It is getting boring - move on to another storyline using old timers that are tried and true. -CG
- This is ATWT, not the Molly Conlan Show. As an avid viewer of ATWT, it is my opinion that by turning the show over to one new actor and leaving out the core families of the show you have alienated a good many viewers that were possibly searching for a soap to watch on a daily basis. This problem could easily be corrected by not making the show into a one woman show. -BA
- I am very disappointed the heads of ATWT would hire a bad actress (Lesli Kay Sterling specifically) who has been found to also be a porn star....did they really think the fans would never find out? This is in very bad taste for a show who wants to portray high morals. I think the character and the actress should be gotten rid of as soon as possible. -LO
- I would write an in depth comment, but I know it doesn't matter. The public has been screaming about this Molly/Lily/Holden thing a long time. But the writers wish to continue indulging this stupid storyline. So none for me. -DE
Damian:
Many liked Damian returning, as he was an interesting twist in the Lily/Holden saga, but felt the writers were less than creative and bought him becoming a priest about as much as they bought Kirk killing Diego.
- Damian was an excellent character -- it was he and Lily that had the chemistry and depth. I stopped watching when he left. -DE
- Damian's return was also very disappointing. He was great on the show -- his return could've been played up so much more. I really never bought the priest bit. -MD
Jack/Carly:
- I like the sparks between Jack and Carly. He has the potential to make her go straight and she has the potential to make him be a bad boy. -LC
- As for Jack and Carly, he is really way too good to be going after her. I would think it should be her running after him! -RA
James:
Sure, many couldn't believe they resurrected James, but it's not like it hasn't been done before - and with the same character. James was one character many viewers were happy to see back in Oakdale.
- Love having James back, he's a great bad guy. -BI
- I have enjoyed the show very much this year especially since James has returned. James and Lucinda work well together andmake every scene together great. -NE
Re-Casting Connor Walsh:
Quite the fiasco when it happened, ending in 1997 with the departure of the character of Connor. This pretty much sums up how many felt:
- The recast of Connor Walsh this year was disheartening. Allyson Rice-Taylor played such a classy, smart, business women and the recast of Susan Batten to "take the character a new direction" seemed ridiculous, especially since that new "direction" was to become an air-headed, stand by your man, southern-accented housewife type. -KJ
Nancy:
- Give Nancy more interaction with the younger crown, she has a lot to teach them. -TM
General Comments About ATWT:
- The show has endured some hard times but, it has brought enjoyment to me for many years. I am a loyal fan!!! -GJ
- In all the years I have watched As The World Turns, I have never fast forwarded my VCR as much as I did this year. -SI
- The stories that get the most talk around here are ones like Damian and Lily, James Stenbeck, Diego - the ones that make you actually sit on the edge of your seat to wait to see what will happen. I'm sorry, but these "let's make a social statement only" storylines should be left for Dateline, not daytime soaps. -KT
- The show is very hard to watch, I fast forward most of it daily. I really enjoyed seeing Julie Snyder, bring her back. I keep trying to watch, but it is hard. The worst thing that happened last year was bringing Damian back and then giving him the worst storyline I could ever imagine. Why did you have to destroy the best character on the show in years. -MS
- I am an ATWT fan, but sometimes I wonder why. There are very promising characters introduced, like Lew's wife, Pamela, and then let go abruptly. Also, great characters with history like Susan, Cal, Jessica are put on recurring status, when they can act rings around all the younger actors. Also, ATWT has gotten so predictable, that we know what will happen, who will die, who will sleep with whom, etc. I suggest that the writers learn more about Oakdale's rich history and traditions and incorporate that more into today's story lines. -CR
- I feel the show is finally getting back to doing what it did best...telling actual STORIES. Slowly but surely, it looks like '98 will be a great year for us fans who have been patient! Now...when will we finally be rid of Molly??? -SO
- ATWT ROCKS -KE
- Worst Storyline: Who Shot Diego (which turned into "Who's GOING to shoot the head writers?) -BR
- It was great to have Damian return, but the writers really messed up and made him look ridiculous...a priest! Really! Are these the same writers who wrote the character of Molly and expect us to believe her garbage? The show has lost its romance, more romanice in 98! And please stop messing up supercouples with lousy storylines. -TE
- The best moment of the year for me was the fire at the church, which brought most of the cast into play in a variety of interesting storylines. Not long thereafter I was disappointed that most of those storylines had petered out in favor of the repetitive Molly-Holden storyline, which I think is predictable and boring (and not well done, either in the writing or the acting). The fire involved people of all ages and questions of race, loyalty, love, hatred, family -- it was fascinating, and promised to lead in many directions. Almost all of those stories have been abandoned or placed on the back burner, but we are seeing the silly Molly story every day. Is this actress somebody's pet or what? I also want to say that the Pamela McCloud character had great promise and could have added to the miniscule black population of Oakdale. I voted in best newcomer for Jack Snyder, but I would have liked to include Pamela McCloud. Please keep the storyline about race relations going and don't let the church fire story turn into the story about Molly's revenge on Holden. -DG
- It's hard to pinpoint some of these categories in a year that was so bad. I feel strongly that many of the stories and details were dropped or left dangling. I hope to see more veterans and to get some of these wacko 97 stories back on track in 98. -WE
